Renter agreement

Ukuu wants you to have a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience while interacting and renting on our platform. In order to provide that experience to you and other users, we ask that you read and follow the summary below. Like the list below, there is an Owner Agreement that protects you as a renter.

Below is a brief summary of your responsibilities as an item renter on Ukuu. For our full and complete set of rules, regulations, and limitations, please visit our Terms of Use page.

  1. Interpersonal Courtesy – All Ukuu users are expected to act with respect, be honest, and stay punctual. This applies to other users your interact with, items you rent or handle, and Ukuu representatives. Give everyone else the courtesy you would expect to receive online and in person.
    1. Be Nice!
      Anyone found in violation of Ukuu’s Terms of Use including engaging in hate speech, harmful or disrespectful conduct, harassment, etc. may have their account restricted and upcoming transactions cancelled at the discretion of an Ukuu employee. Multiple or particularly egregious offenses may result in a permanent ban from using Ukuu services.
    2. Be Safe!
      Like any online interaction, engaging with individuals you do not personally know entails some risk. Take precautions agains scams by asking meaningful questions to verify the legitimacy of a listing and limit the personal details you share. When picking up or dropping off an item, select a safe public space.
    3. Be Aware!
      It is your responsibility to verify that the item you are renting is in safe operating condition. Inspect any item at the time of pickup, test it, and verify that it can be used as intended. Ask the owner if there are any special considerations to take note of when using their item. If you don’t trust that the item is safe to use, don’t accept it!
  2. Item Care – For the period that you are in possession of a rented item, you are responsible for it
    1. Pictures Protect You!
      Take pictures of the item you are renting at the time that you pick it up and when you are returning it. Document the condition of the item including any existing damages. Take pictures of any damages or condition changes that occur while you are in possession of the item as well.
    2. Be Responsible!
      While an item is in your possession, you are acting as its owner. This means you are in change of its maintenance and safe use. If you, anything, or anyone else are harmed or damaged by the unsafe operation or upkeep of the item while it is in your care, you are the one responsible for it. If the item itself is damaged or goes missing, you are responsible for it.
  3. Payments & Charges – You are required to pay for the time that you use an item (including overages), for any consumables that are required to operate the item, and for anything that happens during the time of your rental
    1. Payment Comes First!
      A few hours before your transaction is set to begin, Ukuu will charge you the full price of your rental transaction plus the deposit amount and any other fees (such as taxes or insurance). If everything about the transaction goes well, you’ll be all set and receive your deposit back after the transaction is over. If we run into any problems in charging your card/account for the transaction, we will continue to attempt the charge; if we still cannot complete the charge within 1 hour the transaction’s start time, we will cancel the transaction and you will no longer be able to pick up the item.
    2. We Charge for Damages!
      If an item you rent is damaged or misused  during the time that it is in your possession, you will be charged for its repair or replacement. These charges will first be taken from your deposit amount, but may also be charged from your on-file payment method after an investigation.
    3. We Charge Overages!
      Returning an item late incurs additional fees. These fees will first be taken from your deposit amount, but may also be charged from your on-file payment method after an investigation.
  4. Timeliness – Being on-time and communicating with the item supplier are important, so you may be charged for being late or miscommunication
    1. Be Punctual!
      The Ukuu platform allows you to schedule times and communicate directly so that expectations can be set fairly for both you and the item supplier. Missing the agreed upon times for pickup and drop off will incur additional fees (usually 1.5 times the normal rate for the item).
    2. Request What You Need!
      Requesting more time than you actually need (and dropping an item off early) will incur a partial fee for the unused time of the item. That means you cannot receive a full refund for the time that you did not use an item since your booking ties the item up from other potential renters!
